The artist wanted to create something that is Original, Authentic & Determined to be Chicano.
Some of the original design elements created by the artist to this set of letters,
the artist felt signified part of what it means to be Chicano.
When the artist was asked how or what drove them to create this design below is what they stated :
“The way the “H” in Chicano forms a small muscle arm is for the strength it takes to be Chicano.
The strength it takes to deal with societal prejudices as well as the strength needed
to overcome the daily adversities faced by Chicanos.
The strength symbolized here is also the internal strength it takes to overcome adversity.
This strength it takes to be strong not just for ourselves but for our family and community.
The letter “I” is set up almost as a middle finger (could it be, I will let you be the judge).
A possible middle finger to those who don’t accept us as Chicanos.
It can also be a possible middle finger for those who doubt Chicanos or think Chicanos can’t be successful.
This also is part of the determination of what it takes to be Chicano.
No matter how bad the odds are against us we will find a way to overcome the odds and be successful.
We are Chicanos!”
